My Beliefs PDP April 16, 2011

I believe that IPADS are the future of the students in the classroom.  I believe that these will soon take the place of all textbooks. Each student will be able to read and access information on their IPAD for the daily classroom learning.  It is not very far away.

I believe that computers are an important part of the classroom and need to be used more often.  I believe that there will be new technology that will be available to the students for learning.  I do not know how and in what specific hardware items that will be the new means of accessing information and knowledge. I need to be ready for the new technology to embrace and incorporate them into my teaching.

I know that technology can exponentially increase the ability of a teacher to meet the individual needs of their his students.  I believe that I must take advantage of this to make my dreams of helping students a reality.

PDP Lessons Learned April 16, 2011

My brain went wild with the ideas of the importance of technology to compete with China and India.  The one document reinforced that soon that China will be the largest English speaking country in the world.  It was amazing.  I want to be able to be able to use technology to meet the needs of my students.  I really believe that technology can be a fun way of doing homework.  Blogs will be a great way for them to type up their homework.

I want to make a website for my students and their parents to access information. I need to be able be technically adept to keep up on technology as it changes so fast. The information said that in 2010 information will be doubling each 72 hours.  New technology comes out each month.  We see changes, upgrades and all the students are keeping up with them.  I am not keeping up with the technology. I need to be at the top of the game..

I want to inspire the students to learn themselves.  I want them to know how they can access credible information to learn about whatever they desire to know.  I want my students to understand the different between primary and secondary sources. I want to teach them about bias and to be able to recognize the perspective of the different writers.  These articles helped me understand what technology can do in the classroom.

PDP Strength and Weaknesses.

I was overcome with inferiority after having finished the two surveys.  Reading these articles and watching the videos and slideshows overcomes me with the need of technology literacy by teachers and by all students.  The knowledge that is out on technology is overwhelming and knowledge can be taught in such a variety of ways to make teaching more meaningful to the students.  As a teacher, it is my responsibility to get my students more prepared to compete in the global market.  The figures of the United States compared to China and Indian were overwhelming.  They I took the surveys and I saw how unprepared I am for being a great teacher of technology.  I want to be better prepared and this self inventory has forced it to my attention.

Strengths and Weaknesses

I am strong on the use of technology for business options.  I have worked in the business world for 40 years.  I used spreadsheets, databases and programs to analyze the financial well-being of the businesses I worked with.  I have completed mass email and letter sending for business and private ventures.  I have been involved in social pages and used the internet to research and access educational areas.  I am able to troubleshoot my own computer for basic areas.

My weaknesses are sometimes the little things. I cannot remember the exact way to transfer items between files.  If I don't use them often , I will never be able to remember.  I have to take the time every week to work on some computer technology. One of my goals will be to work on new technology in the classroom each week.  My goal will be to take classes in basic computer maintenance.  This course will give me opportunities to load new programs on my computer, increase computer memory size and to minimize unnecessary items stored on my computer.

I will also take courses in computer ideas for teaching history in the classroom.  This will give me greater ideas of making history come alive to the students in the classroom.

I also want to take further classes in making educational sites for my students to access primary sources.  I want to find ways to implement the new Social Studies writing and reading core for High Schools.  It would help me get the students reading and writing. This will help me become a better teacher.  Technology is the only way I am going to give every student the attention they deserve.

April 10, 2011 Picass Post

What:
The journey around campus went really well.  Our group knew where everything was and it went well.  We took good pictures and it was good company as we walked around campus.

So What:
We came back and learned how to apply all those photographic adjustments that Picassa can provide.  I certainly enjoyed seeing what would happen to the photograph from applying the different function to the different pictures.  I was fun to see the collage that we made and posted.

Now What?
This could be a process for all students to apply to their study of history.  This could be a homework assignment that had the students take pictures of local historical sites as they went around their community learning about it.

April 2, 2011 Storyboard

What:
We finished our storyboard.  I have it saved and now I have to do it completely correct and get it to my web site.  I have to follow it step by step and see if I can make it possible.  I really believe it is something that I could use in my class.

So what?
I am learning a lot in the class.  Doc Waters, you ought to feel so good about how you are making a silk purse (maybe a plastic one) out of me.  I want to really thank you for your great patience.

Now What?  |
I need to do one out of class.  I have started one for my classroom someday.  I think it will be good learning tool for a hard point to teach.  I am excited to give it a try.  Thanks again,

March 27, 2011 Post Storyboard Experience

What:

Jerry Hunt and I are having some good experiences as we prepare a document about the Mudraking during the progressive period in the early 1900's.  It will be exciting as we finish it in the next two weeks.  It is a privilege to work with Jerry.  I am excited for the perceptions and the calmness he brings to this effort.  I am grateful for his influence.

So What:  This is a story that will be a great for my teaching of American History.  There is not a lot of information on mudraking on line or on you tube.  It is important that I am able to learn how to complete this kind of assignment.  It is important because it can be used for all kins of teaching experiences where multi-media experiences.

Now What:  Jerry and I need to work hard to make it a professional experience that could be used in the classroom.  I need to finish the race and complete the assignment that we are working on

March 19, 2011 Evolution of Copyright Laws

What

This was a great class for me as you developed the history of copyright laws.  This evolution or history (yea) led to greater understanding of how media has been protected.  I have lived through most of these eras.  I have had records, 8 tracts, tape to tapes, cassette tapes and CDs. I was amazed at how fast technology changed and how after thinking they had laws to protect way into the future, that Congress and the industry had to come back and address these concerns again.

So What

It gave me a commitment to be careful using copyrighted materials. If I was the artist, I would hope that I could receive gratuities when my work is used.  I can see how hard it is for the artists to receive their proper income especially in today with the great availability of technology and the ever changing evolution to be able to copy new medias.  I can sure see the importance of keeping current on technology and the educational laws for use in a classroom. I want to be able to use technology to enhance the learning and the attention spanofthe students I will work with.

So NowWhat?

I will keep current and learn what items I can legally use in the classroom. Thanks for the impressive presentation.

March 13, 2011 Vidcast Blog John Haws

Vidcast Video

My video is Baby Ruth History
The  Curriculum is for History II.

I didn't think I could do a video or put something on You Tube.  It was a fun thing for me to learn.  The video we did was based on the History of the naming of Baby Ruth.  Most people think that Baby Ruth was based on the Baseball star Babe Ruth.  It was based on the daughter of President Cleveland.  This can lead to a discussion of the Presidency of Grover Cleveland and how he brought prestige back to the Presidency.  There has been nothing but weak presidents since Abraham Lincoln.

It could also be used for to show to show what was happening in the 1920's (baseball, politics, business, Industry, family lives of the Presidents).

This can be a good filler, attention getter, or introduction to life in the 20's.

This video has a fat man as the subject and it is really corny.  It is very amateurish but real.  It is kind of fun.
I would rather have a more professional version,   I am going to work on this.

I will use this process.  I learned about how I can put You Tube Videos in my Resource file on my website.  I am very happy for this experience.  I am going to start work on Videos that I can use for my classroom.  I am very thrilled.  I learned how to post a video to You Tube.  I learned how to send a You Tube video to my gmail address.  I was connect it to my Resource file under a clean connection.  I am very grateful for this experience.

March 6, 2011 Vidcast Blog

Vidcast Blog

What?

The Vidcast is a great experience to be able to learn a new skill.  My children can all do it and they just don't understand why I can't do it.  I am excited for the opportunity to finish this assignment this week.  I have written the script and am glad that I will be able to do it.

So What?

I can see a lot of possibilities that I can do with the Vidcast in the classroom.  I want to be able to be a part of this process and be able to be confident in my ability to perform the task.  I want my children to be amazed at all the things their father can do.

Now What?

I want to finish the assignment this week with flying colors.  I will work hard to make it happen.

John Haws Podcast February 20, 2011 EDSC 3250 Section 1

Podcast Blog

What:

It has been a bad week for me in Instructional Media.  I couldn't focus on the Podcast instructions and still have not completed it, but I will.  It would have been so much better if I could have followed you.  I was behind and did not want to get special help.  I will get it.  I flunked my last assignment, and I completed it.

Now What:

Now I need to complete the assignment.  I have that on my agenda for tomorrow.  I look forward to completing it on my own.  I am sure glad that we have another week and I don't have to go to your class tomorrow.

So What:

Next Monday I need to be ready to concentrate on the lesson.

February 5, 2011 Google Part 2

What?

We have overwhelmingly taken on a lot of beneficial information.  I believe the work that I have done is going to make it possible to have an awesome web page as a teacher.  This site will give all the possibilities to have a successful technological adventure in the classroom.  I am excited about the quiz page.  I am excited about the calendar and the announcement pages.  I am excited that I was able to post my picture on the page.  I am amazed at the possibilities.

So What?

This is a great opportunity to prepare for fall semester and get my web page ready to be used.  I am excited about the unlimited uses that can come from using the Web site.  I am excited to be able to give parents a site to be able to see when homework is due, read the announcements.  It is something that I want to have in my future classroom.  You have made this all possilble.

Now What?

I have to get practicing and to take the time to become fluent in the process.  Practice, Practice, Practice will be the key to make it a part of my life.  I feel like when we moved pretty fast over all of these items.  I have to make sure I incorporate them in my brain.  The web site will be as good as I incorporate it into my life.  Thank you for making it possible.

P.S.: Sorry about coming into your classroom twice in one week.  Thanks for being so patient.  I wish I could promise you that it wouldn't happen again.  Sincerely  John Haws

31 January - Google Part 1

Google Part 1 Thoughts by John Haws

What

There is an amazing amount of information contained in what was presented in those few minutes.  I signed up for engrade.  It was an amazing straightforward approach to scores. I had worked with documents since last semester.  I had shared documents and learned to work on group projects with the program.  What I knew was just a very trivial amount compared to what was shown in the class and what I am able to work with.  Forms, Calendars, and spreadsheets can also be used in my classroom someday.  I appreciate learning control c for copy and control v for paste.  These are simple things but they make all the difference in the world.  I have never made a power point presentation in google.  It was great to point that it can be done.

So What?

This is going to make all the difference to me as a teacher.  The exercise today of learning how to do questionaires and to get the results back is a major accomplishment to learn.  It can be a simple way of students doing homework and accessing it.  Blogging can also be a great way to have students type up their homework responses and a great way students can use technology to do their homework.  I am excited to have all these options at my fingertips in Gmail.  I am amazed at the amount of information I learned in those two hours.  Teaching students in this world needs to have a technology flair.  Students have conditioned themselves to learn by technology.  The classroom function needs to be envisioned to include technology.  I want to be thrilled to learn and not be the old fat guy that is trying not to be always innovating and learning.

Now What?

I have to practice and incorporate all these items into my plans for my classroom.  I have to practice them enough so they are a part of me.  I need to completely use the web site and calendar.  I need to make possible the use of the internet for homework and students and parents access to the website and pertinent information.  I am slow and it is hard to keep up with the movement in the class.  I have to practice each week on my own so I won't be inferior and will be able to fully learn the information of the classroom.  Thanks for giving me this vision

17 January Introduction

My Educational Hero

When my mother was in her 50's, she went back to Universtiy to finish her degree and become a teacher.  She became a elementary education teacher.  She taught 5th and 6th grade.  She did not need the job or the money.  She went back to make a difference.  She was only able to teach for 10 years before getting cancer and dying.  When we had the funeral, the church was full of students and parents who came with stories of how my mother made a difference.  Her favorite students were struggling students.  Her goal was to make a difference.
She would have the whole family helping her to prepare the extra effort items to ensure successs.  Many a night I would have to go with her and leave underwear, backpacks or a certain toy on the porch for one of her students and then run.  She saw a need of physical, mental, emotional help.  She would always give the students hugs like a grandma would and always said when you are fat, they never worry about child abuse.  She believed that hugs made the world a better place.
Before cancer invaded her body, she was honored for her teaching methods by the State of Utah.  She never told any of us kids about her award.  She only told us when she saw success in one of her students.  We knew her students and followed their progress over the years.  I know that whereever she is she is still watching over them and the progress they made.   I want to be this kind of teacher.
